Getting better every week!

An early 10am pushback saw Old Southendians make the short trip to Chelmsford, coffee barely kicked in but spirits high.

Chelmsford struck first with a somewhat fortunate goal, but Old Southendians responded well and grew into the game. The equaliser came through Elvo, who converted confidently from a penalty corner to make it 1–1, a fair reflection of a competitive opening period.

Old Southendians continued to play some of their best hockey of the season, moving the ball well and creating chances. A big part of that progress has been the development of the four youngsters, who have grown massively in confidence and ability over the season. Their energy and composure lifted the whole side and allowed Old Southendians to compete strongly across the pitch.

The most entertaining moment of the morning came courtesy of a particularly mouthy Chelmsford forward. As his frustration levels rose, so did the volume and theatrics — behaviour that would arguably have been better suited to a drama class than a hockey pitch. Elvo, playing the role of quiet instigator to perfection, quietly pushed a few buttons until the inevitable happened: a yellow card and ten minutes in the sin bin for excessive moaning and dramatics.

Match report - Noel

Despite Old Southendians’ continued pressure, Chelmsford went ahead again with another fortunate goal before adding a well-worked short corner to extend their lead. While the final score read 3–1, it didn’t reflect how competitive the match had been, nor the quality of hockey Old Southendians produced throughout.

While the points didn’t come this week, there’s plenty to be positive about. The team is steadily improving week in, week out, and with confidence growing, Old Southendians look well set for a first win at home next week against Saffron Walden.
