Old Southendian 5s produced an excellent second-half comeback to defeat Havering 5s 4–3 after trailing 2–1 at half-time.

We began the match in a 4-3-3 formation, with both sides closely matched during an even opening period. Havering looked the stronger side early on and took their chances well, but Southendian stayed in touch when Fessey-0 got a crucial touch to a penalty corner, deftly deflecting the ball into the net.

With Havering taking a narrow 2–1 lead into the break, captain Stubbo made a tactical adjustment, switching Southendian from a 4-3-3 formation to 4-4-2. The change brought greater balance to the side and allowed us to take control of the second half. It also moved young Austin back into midfield, where he excelled. His direct running, ability to beat defenders and excellent link-up play with the forwards caused Havering problems throughout the second half.

The equaliser came following excellent attacking play down the left, with Clarky applying the finishing touch to bring Southendian level. Austin continued to create opportunities with his pace and determination, and Southendian soon completed the turnaround through a well-taken finish from Tim. The fourth and decisive goal came from Fessey-0, who grabbed his second of the game with another deft deflection from a powerful strike into the D.

Havering pushed hard in the closing stages and pulled a goal back with three minutes remaining, but Southendian defended resolutely to secure a thrilling 4–3 victory.

It was a terrific comeback, with the half-time tactical change proving decisive.

Austin's outstanding contribution provided the attacking spark, driving the team forward with pace, skill and determination throughout the second half. His performance earned him a thoroughly deserved Man of the Match award. Meanwhile, the entire team showed great character and resilience to hold on for the win.

If we can perform as we did in the second half, we will be a very difficult team to beat.

Roll on next week!
